Bostik League Canvey Island (A)

Another defeat for the misfiring Blues as Canvey took an easy win. The new look Bury squad are finding it tough going early on in this league campaign. Canvey were well organised, strong and showed great teamwork in every position, things Bury found hard to handle. Canvey went in front early, on 9 minutes a good attacking move saw Frankie Merrifield nod in a header past Bury keeper Luis Tibbles from very close range. Ollie Hughes went on a charge down the wing for Bury on 15 minutes and hit a shot from inside the box which was saved well by Harry Palmer. Canvey went as close to a second goal on 19 minutes with Jordan Cox heading against the post. On 31 minutes Jake Jolliffe out wide on the wing put a good cross in for Merrifield as Canvey went on the attack again but a good stop from Tibbles denied the home side a second goal. Canvey ended the half in dominant fashion and lead at the break.

Half Time: Canvey Island 1 Bury Town 0

Second half Canvey continued to control the game. Bury went close on 46 minutes when Ollie Fenn headed wide from a corner. Another attack from Canvey on 52 minutes saw Josh Hutchinson make an opportunity for himself but he shot high over the bar from the edge of the box. Jake Jolliffe tried his luck from range for Canvey on 58 minutes with a low powerful strike but Tibbles was equal to it and got down quickly to smother the ball. Bury looked livelier with the introduction of Tanner Call and Emmanuel Machaya from the bench. The duo injected some energy and pace back in to the Bury attack. On 72 minutes Machaya found Call in the box but the defence stood solid and cleared the danger. Call was in action again on 75 minutes getting on the end of a long ball Call was in on goal with just the keeper to beat and lifted is lob over the keeper but also over the bar. Canvey went further ahead with a well organised attack. Mitchell Gilbey crossed a well flighted ball into the box for Marlon Agyakwa to smash home off the underside of the bar. Canvey took the points and a well-deserved win as for the Blues they will need to regroup and go again as they continue to gel together.
