Bury Town’s incredible season came to an end after a tense playoff semi-final which saw Brentwood take the win after extra time.

Both sides started on the attack but as the game played out it was Brentwood who created more chances. On 4 minutes Bury broke forward when Ed Upson put a low ball through to Luke Brown in the box but some good defensive work from Brentwood won the ball back. On 9 minutes Brentwood pushed forward with Romel Aarons Royal putting a good cross in close to goal but Josh Curry put in a solid header clear. Max Maughn got Bury going back on the attack on 16 minutes when he found Cemal Ramadan in the box but his shot to the near post was saved well by Melvin Minter. On 26 minutes Ollie Canfer sent a pass through to Luke Brown on the edge of box but he shot high over the bar for Bury. On 27 minutes Brentwood had a chance when Mekhi McKenzie put a cross into the box for Andrew Freeman but his shot was deflected wide. A minute later another Brentwood attack saw Max Maughn clearing the ball close to his own goal. On 34 minutes Marlon Agyakwa put another cross into the Bury box for Andrew Freeman but he shot over the bar. Brentwood were finding the space they needed and another chance on 36 minutes saw Matt Cripps go on a driving run forward and set up Marlon Agyakwa to shoot but Charlie Beckwith made a good save. Bury’s best chance of the game came on 40 minutes when they had four chances to score in the same attack, hitting the post and the bar before Matt Cripps blocked a shot on the goal line but it remained goal less at the interval.

Brentwood continued to find the chances second half and Bury had to dig deep in defence to keep Brentwood out. On 53 minutes a Brentwood attack saw Max Maughn again clearing the ball close to the Bury goal. On 58 minutes Ed Upson got Bury back on the front foot with a good pass through to Cemal Ramadan in the box but some excellent cover play from Matt Cripps denied the Bury marksman a chance at goal. On 60 minutes James Love sent a ball to the edge of the box for Brentwood which Marlon Agyakwa sent high over the bar. Max Maughn went on a long run for Bury on 66 minutes and got his shot away but the ball went just wide of the post. A Brentwood corner on 81 minutes was sent into the box by Shad Ngandu and was headed wide by Mekhi McKenzie. Bury got forward on 84 minutes with Cemal Ramadan out wide on the wing but his cross into the box was too close to the keeper who collected the ball. A late charge forward from Brentwood on 87 minutes saw Mekhi McKenzie break into the Bury box but Oliver Yun was there to clean up and get the ball clear. With the defences on top neither side could find a way though and the game went into extra time.

In extra time Mekhi McKenzie broke the deadlock on 95 minutes when he got into the box and fired Brentwood in front. Bury then pulled level when Ryan Jolland’s shot was deflected past the keeper. Then a moment of magic from Daniel Ogunleye saw him fire Brentwood back in front with a world class finish into the top corner from outside the box giving the keeper no chance. With time running out for Bury a last chance corner saw keeper Charlie Beckwith join the attack but the ball was cleared up field and Shad Ngandu chased down the loose ball to score into an empty net. Brentwood took the win and will now face Bowers & Pitsea, who overcame Felixstowe & Walton on penalties, in the playoff final. As for Bury Town it has been an incredible season which went down to the last day and saw Bury finish as runners up in the league. The Players, Staff and Supporters can feel very proud of what has been accomplished this season.
