Ed Upson retires from football

Bury Town can announce that last season’s play off final hero Ed Upson has retired from football, following a sucessful career.

Ed scored the winning goal for Ipswich Town against Southampton in the FA Youth Cup final in 2005 when he was 15. 20 years later he replicated this for his home town club in the Play Off final to see us promoted to step 3 football.

Ed signed a professional contract at the age of 17 for Ipswich Town, his Ipswich debut was soon on the cards as a substitute in the Football League Cup at Shrewsbury on 11th August 2009. The match went to penalties after a 3–3 draw and Ed of course stepped up in the moment of need and scored one of the penalties to help Ipswich through to the next round.

Ed made a very successful football career also playing for Stevenage, Barnet, Yeovil, Millwall, MK Dons, Bristol Rovers, Newport County. Amassing 590 appearances along the way!

Ed also represented England at under U17, U18 & U19 level which an incredible achievement on its own.

Ed is from Bury St Edmunds and in his own words when Cole Skuse and Muzzy became Manager and assistant said it was a no brainer to come home.

A very successful first season, Ed’s influence on the group was apparent. Full of class moments and important goals. Ed’s second season must have been written in the stars, his class on the pitch was evident and no more so than the final moments of the 2024/2025 season when he stepped forward to place the ball in the top corner to put Bury Town in step 3 football for the first time in 15 years.

Everyone at Bury Town would like to wish Ed and his family all the very best for the future. We hope to see them all supporting the team and the club in the future.
