Former Yeovil, Millwall and MK Dons man joins home town club

Bury Town are pleased to welcome our latest new signing to the club as Ed Upson signs on a two-year deal after leaving Stowmarket Town at the end of the 2022-23 season.

The Bury St Edmunds born 33 year old, has a great pedigree as a professional having progressed through the ranks at Ipswich Town to play with Yeovil Town, Millwall, Milton Keynes Dons, Bristol Rovers, Newport County.

Having scored the winning goal in the 2005 FA Youth Cup final for Ipswich Town against Southampton he went on to enjoy a strong career throughout the Football League.
He played an important part in Yeovil’s promotion to the Championship in 2013, scoring the goal that saw the Glovers defeat Sheffield United on their way to the second tier.

He joined Stevenage in Sky Bet League Two in January 2022 on loan from Newport but a desire to move back closer to his family saw him sign for Stowmarket Town in the summer of 2022. He enjoyed a very successful season with Stowmarket making 42 appearances and scoring 11 goals, signing off with a goal in their Suffolk Premier Cup Final defeat at Ram Meadow to Needham Market.

He was also selected in the Isthmian North Division ‘Team of the Season’ as voted for by all the managers within the division.

Having left Stowmarket following the conclusion of the season, Cole Skuse and Paul Musgrove were keen to bring him to his home town club where he will link with his former manager and former teammate Josh Curry who has also made the switch this summer.

Manager Cole Skuse said “We were alerted to Ed’s availability following his decision to leave Stowmarket and we were keen to bring him to the club and we are delighted that he has agreed to join us. He has an excellent playing career in professional football behind him and I know from what I have been told that he was a stand out player in this division last season”

“We were not sure if a deal could be possible but everyone has worked hard to make it happen and we are excited to have another quality player with us for what is a fresh start”

Assistant Manager Paul Musgrove, who signed Ed while at Stowmarket last season said “Ed’s experience and calibre in football needs no introduction and we are delighted to get him to his home town club. I worked with Ed last season and he was a model professional on and off the pitch and led by example with his attention to detail”

“His ability to take on in-game information is excellent and this will be a big benefit to the rest of the team and for us as a management team. He is a Bury lad as with all his family and they will all be welcome at the club for what we all hope will be a successful season”
