Blues exit County Cup at Semi Final stage

Premier Cup · Semi Final Bury Town 0–2 Needham Market Wed 18 Mar 2026 · Ram Meadow Match centre

Under the floodlights, Bury Town’s impressive unbeaten run came to an end as Needham Market ran out 2–0 winners to book their place in the Suffolk Premier Cup Final — although this was far from a one-sided contest.

Coming into the game in strong form, Bury looked composed early on and were seeing plenty of the ball. But before they could really settle, Needham struck with their first real moment.

Reggie Lambe opened the scoring on 4 minutes, reacting quickest after a blocked effort to slot home from close range. It was a well-taken goal — but from Bury’s point of view, one that came slightly out of nothing and gave Needham an early advantage they were able to build around.

Despite the early setback, Bury responded well and probably edged possession for much of the first half. The issue wasn’t control — it was cutting edge. Too many passes just not quite finding their mark, a few uncharacteristically loose moments disrupting rhythm, and when chances did come, they were often straight at the keeper.

There were still flashes of real quality. Joseph Carroll was a standout outlet, repeatedly switching play with excellent diagonal passes that stretched Needham and created openings. Max benefited from this, finding space out wide and getting into good crossing areas, but the final delivery or finish just wouldn’t quite fall.

One of the key moments of the half came on 32 minutes when Needham hit the crossbar — a looping effort bouncing dangerously on the line — only for Charlie Beckwith to recover superbly and claw it away with a full-stretch save. A top reaction stop that kept Bury very much in the game.

However, just a minute later, Needham made the pressure count.
Myles Cowling doubled the lead on 33 minutes, finishing calmly into the bottom corner after being played through. Again, clinical — two real chances, two goals.

At the back, Joe White and Lewis O’Malley had a busy evening dealing with a side happy to play quickly on the break. While maybe not quite at their usual sharpest, both put in a strong shift, battling throughout and dealing with a lot of pressure.

Bury had their moments too — including a number of corners across both halves — but couldn’t quite make one count. It was just one of those nights where things didn’t quite click in the final third.

The second half followed a familiar pattern. Bury saw plenty of the ball, trying to probe and build, while Needham were well organised, defending in numbers and looking to counter when possible. To Bury’s credit, most of those breaks were handled well.

There were still moments to lift the crowd. Max produced a brilliant run, somehow jinking past three players, only to be brought down by the fourth — the kind of move that deserved more.

Both keepers remained involved without being overworked, with Beckwith again alert when needed, while at the other end Bury’s efforts still struggled to truly test Bradbrook.

Changes from the bench didn’t quite turn the game, although Tayo’s Flowers made a lively late impact, working hard and asking a few questions of the Needham defence in the closing minutes.

On the night, Joseph Carroll edges Man of the Match. Solid defensively, dominant in the air, and consistently looking to make things happen with his passing — particularly those diagonals that were one of Bury’s main attacking outlets. A composed and reliable performance in a game where Bury never quite found their usual flow.

In summary, this wasn’t Bury at their best — and they’ll know it. A few too many uncharacteristic errors in possession and a lack of sharpness in key moments allowed Needham to take their chances and manage the game without ever needing to dominate it.

That said, this result shouldn’t overshadow what has been a very strong run leading into this match. On another night, with slightly cleaner passing and one or two moments going differently, this could easily have been a much closer contest.
