Although technically the current Hythe Town and Bury Town have never met in competitive action before, The Blues have faced the former Hythe Town on six occasions as the two clubs were members of the Beazer Homes League for three seasons from 1989-90 to 1991-92. At the end of that season, Hythe Town were liquidated and left the Southern League. For the 1992-93 season, supporters of Hythe Town formed Hythe United in the Kent County League, and in 2001, United changed their name to Town to revive the name of the former club. Hythe won promotion to the Southern Division of the Beazer Homes League at the end of the 1988-89 season, and therefore the two sides met for the first time. On 9th September 1989, Bury defeated Hythe 3-1 at home thanks to a hat-trick from Paul Keys in front of 428. The return match at Hythe saw the Kent side gain revenge with a 4-3 win in front of a crowd of 224, Bury’s goals coming from Dave McCoy, Bobby Mayes and Mitchell Springett. The following season, Bury lost 2-1 at Ram Meadow with the Blues loan goal coming from Bobby Mayes as 334 watched on, and down in Kent, Hythe completed a league double over the Blues with another 2-1 victory, Paul Keys against finding the net in front of 325. The 1991-92 season was the last time the sides would meet, and it was once against Hythe who completed a league double with a 3-0 win at Ram Meadow watched by 235 spectators, and then towards the end of the season, Bury lost 3-1 at Fort Road, Adam Prior with the only strike for the visitors in front of a small crowd of 150. At the end of the 1991-92 season, Bury finished 17th and Hythe finished 13th, but the Kent side went into liquidation during the summer and their supporters were left to pick up the pieces and reform as Hythe United.
