Bury Town lose out in penalty shootout

Bury Town faced another penalty shootout after a goalless draw but this time Blues go out of the Velocity Trophy. Chances in front of goal were few and far between for both side as they are suffering from a growing injury list. Bury went close on 5 minutes with Darren Mills headed effort which Heybridge keeper Danny Sambridge did well to tip over the bar. On 22 minutes Ollie Hughes crossed in to the box and was unlucky not to score as the keeper saved on the line. Bury were hit with another injury on 24 minutes when Ricky Spriggs had to be stretchered off. A quick break from Bury on 28 minutes saw Mills get in to a shooting position but his shot went wide. Heybridge went close to scoring on 30 minutes when Ben Griffiths hit a free kick against the bar from out wide. Hughes got in to the box for Bury on 32 minutes, but his low pass was easy for the keeper to stop. Another free kick for the visitors on the edge of the box was fired over the bar by Jack Cawley on 36 minutes. Bury finished the half on the attack but lacked the finishing touch as the half ended goalless.

Second half was more of the same, Bury were first to go close on 47 minutes with Mills crossing deep to Hughes at the far post but the cross just too strong for Hughes to control. Burys best chance came on 50 minutes, Tevan Allen hit a thumping shot which Sambridge blocked well and the rebound fell to Mills but again the shot was blocked. On 60 minutes Tommy Robinson went on a run through the center and was in on goal but he shot wide. Heybridge substitute Juan Luque hit a shot from distance on 7i minutes but Bury’s new signing in goal Ben Mayhew managed to palm the shot out for a corner. Heybridge had the ball in the net on 77 minutes only to be ruled offside. Heybridge were reduced to ten men on 80 minutes when Kreshnic Krasniqi picked up his second yellow card. The game ended all square at the final whistle, so it was to be another penalty shootout for Bury but unfortunately the lottery of a shootout was not to end in Burys favour as they ended up on the wrong end of a 5-4 final score. Ten man Heybridge go through to the next round and Bury bow out of the competition for this season.
