Match report | Preview
Bury Town have to settle for a point in season opener.

A good all-round performance from Bury but too many missed chances in front of goal looked to be going to cost the Blues in their first league game of the season. First half, Romford had the early chances, on 7 minutes Jonathan Nzengo worked the ball across the Bury back line and hit a thumping shot which was inches wide of the far post. Bury went straight on the attack and a long ball up field found Liam Wales who made the though pass to Cemal Ramadan in the box, Ramadan put his effort to high over the bar. Nzengo went close again for Romford on 14 minutes, a great cross in from Thomas Vickers deep in to the box and Nzengo was at the far post but the Blues defence did just enough to keep the ball out. Two minutes later Nzengo had another go when he broke through the Bury back line and was in on goal but for a fantastic save by Bury debutant keeper Luis Tibbles. Bury grew in to the half and started to press Romford back. Another Bury debutant Darren Mills went close for blues on 18 minutes. after powering down the right wing a give and go with Ramadan saw Mills head the ball a foot over the bar. Mills had another chance on 23 minutes, Bradley Barber putting a beautiful lob up the left but Mills could only hit the side netting. Bury were awarded a penalty on 28 minutes as Mills was bundled over in the box but again Mills failed to score from the spot as Michael Gooch made a good save. Bury were on top at the break but both sides were reflecting on a lot of missed chances.

Half Time: Bury Town 0 Romford 0

Bury pressed from the start of the second half. On 47 minutes Noel Aitkens broke down the right and put a great though ball in to Ramadan in the box but he pulled his shot wide. Another of Bury’s new signings David Cooper broke from the back, on down the wing and put the perfect cross in for Mills but the keeper was quick to intercept the ball. Nzengo had given Bury problems all afternoon and was almost clean though on goal on 68 minutes but for a close call offside flag. Blues kept pushing and were dominating the possession. On 69 minutes Barber put a deep corner in for Leon Ottley-Gooch to shoot from close range but again the keeper was quick to react through a crowd of players. Bury were probing in attack but were hit by the inevitable sucker punch, caught out by a stunning strike from Jonathan Nzengo on 72 minutes. Ollie Hughes came off the bench for Bury and had an immediate impact on the game, a long throw in from Darcy Death found Hughes in on goal, Hughes shot went agonizingly close but was just over the bar. On 80 minutes Hughes drove down the wing and on into the box but put his shot just wide. Bury finally grabbed an equalizer on 81 minutes with another stunning strike this time from Camel Ramadan. After a good spell of build-up play from Bury Ramadan picked up the ball on the edge of the box and his low venomous strike flew past the outstretched keeper and in to the bottom corner. A late surge from Bury as they searched for the winner saw Mills again go close on 88 minutes when his header grazed the wrong side of the far post. More late chances saw Barber shoot wide on 90 minutes after another great run from Hughes. A long throw from Death fell to Ramadan inside the six-yard box on 93 minutes but his effort sailed over the bar. An improvement on last season’s double win for Romford over Bury but The Blues will feel this is two points dropped as too many missed chances saw the game end all square at the final whistle
