Local derby ends all square as Blues come from behind to take a point

Bury Town would have been looking for more from this game and with Soham needing a win to help their current league position at the bottom end of the table the visitors pressed Bury all afternoon. Bury went close on 8 minutes, a long throw from Darcy Death found Luke Read who passed to Josh Mayhew in the box but his shot was saved by the keeper. Soham has a chance on 13 minutes when Lewis Endacott lobbed the Bury defence and found Rob Mason at the far post with Neil O’Sullivan close by and the Bury keeper won the ball. On 24 minutes a golden opportunity fell to Mayhew when Lloyd Groves sinning clearance fell in Mayhews path and he was in on goal only to shoot well wide. It was Soham who were first to get off the mark on 31 minutes after a mix up at the back from Bury let in Sam Mulready who fired his shot past the Bury keeper. Noel Aitkens put a great cross in for Mayhew in the box on 34 minutes but Mayhews shot was blocked. A minute later Mayhew turned provider, getting to the six-yard box and laying off the perfect low ball into the box but no Bury players were there too make it count. Joe Yaxley showed skill on 43 minutes going around his marker by the corner flag and playing Luke Read in for a shot which went just wide of the far post.

Bury started the second half on top and went close on 46 minutes with Mayhew putting Aitkens in on goal but Aitkens pulled his shot wide. Josh Mayhew had another good chance on 55 minutes when a long throw and a header put the pull over to him in the six-yard box but his header was just too strong as the keeper tipped it over the bar. Mayhew did pull Bury level on 58 minutes, firing in a curling strike that went around the keeper and inside the far post. Soham were fighting hard which lead to an end to end game in the second period. Mayhew went close again on 61 minutes, sliding in on gaol from a Ryan Jolland though ball but Mayhew was an inch wide of making contact with the ball and giving Bury the lead. On 75 minutes a corner for Soham saw Joe Tennant head just over the bar. More late chances for Bury saw Taylor Bannister miss from close range on 89 minutes after a good spell of build up play from the home side and Luke Read having his goal bound shot blocked close to goal on 90 minutes. Bury had to settle for a point in their last home game of the season and Soham earned a vital point in their fight for survival at the bottom end of the Ryman Division One North.
