Bury Town fail to capitalize on a good attacking performance

Bury Town were left licking their wounds after multiple chances to take the win. Romford keeper Callum Chafer was in fine form to deny Bury getting anything from this game. As early as the 3rd minute Bury went close with Bradley Barber beating the offside trap and putting a cross in the box for Josh Mayhew to strike but Chafer was out quickly to clear the danger. Ryan Jolland put the perfect pass through to Ollie Hughes on 6 minutes but Chafer made the save. A minute later Bury had another chance with Mayhew breaking down the wing and putting a cross in to the far post where Noel Aitken almost put the ball past Chafer but the keeper quick reactions kept the ball out. Bury were rampant in the first 15 minutes and should have been in front but Romford weathered the storm thanks to Chafer. Romford got more possession as the half went on and on 33 minutes a long ball into the box found Chris Taylor but his shot went over the bar. Ollie Fenn kept Romford out on 36 minutes clearing the ball off the line from a Chinedu McKenzie strike. On 38 minutes Bury put another chance wide of the far post from Barber after Hughes played him in on goal. Noel Aitken set up a good chance for Bury in injury time with a decent ball in to the box which was a inch away from Hughes to head home.

Second half was more of the same with Bury missing chance after chance mostly down to an outstanding performance from their keeper and man of the match Callum Chafer. Bury were first to go close on 48 minutes when Noel Aitkens crossed in for Josh Mayhew in the box but Mayhews turn and strike went wide of the far post. The sucker punch came on 56 minutes with Abdeen Abdul beating the defence and crossing in to the box for Chinedu McKenzie to strike from close range past Bury keeper Neil O’Sullivan. Romford should have gone 2-0 up a minute later when Abdul was found unmarked in the box but could only shoot wide. another golden opportunity for Bury came on 59 minutes when Ryan Jolland put a ball to the feet of Ollie Hughes on the six-yard line but his scuffed shot was cleared by Chafer. Romford found themselves down to 10 men on 62 minutes after a two-footed challenge on Jolland earned Jonathan Adebayo a straight red card. Bury were denied a clear penalty on 67 minutes. Jolland played a great ball through to Hughes in the box but before Hughes could strike was bundled over by a clumsy challenge by Tom Potter, missed by all the officials Bury were enraged by the decision and turned the pressure up on levelling the score. Taylor Bannister came off the bench and made a chance for himself on 81 minutes, working the ball across the box Bannister hit a solid strike against the bar. More late chances for Bury saw Hughes through on goal on 87 minutes but the keeper made another good save. Luke Read beating the keeper but taking too long to strike and Chafer taking the ball off him on 88 minutes. Bury had another good shout for a penalty came on 90 minutes, this time Luke Read was bundled over in the box and Hughes got on the loose ball but an of balance Hughes could only shoot over the bar. The game ended with Romford taking the win and Callum Chafer taking the applause for his outstanding goal keeping display.
