Bury Town prove again they can compete with the best in the league

Bury fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of the league leaders. Bury took the game to Brightlingsea first half and went close on just 2 minutes with Luke Read picking up the ball just outside the box and hitting a strike a foot over the bar. Brightlingsea replied in the next attack with Aaron Condon crossing in to the box for Jake Gould to strike but Bury keeper Neil O’Sullivan made the save. Josh Gould went close for the home side on 14 minutes, Condon putting a corner in to the six-yard box but Gould headed wide. Bury had a good chance from a Bradley Barber corner with Ollie Fenn getting around the back of the defence but headed just over on 22 minutes. Barber had a free kick for Bury on the left of the box on 28 minutes but his dipping shot went high on to the roof of the net. Brightlingsea should have taken the lead on 40 minutes when Josh Gould put a long throw in to the feet of Tom Richardson in the box but his scuffed shot was an easy save for O’Sullivan. Another long throw this time from Bury’s Darcy Death made a great chance for Blues on 45 minutes, Death launching a throw high which beat everyone and bounced agonizingly close to the top far corner but when the wrong side of the upright.

Brightlingsea upped their game second half and always looked dangerous on the attack and on 52 minutes Condon played a good cross in that fell to Connor Hogan in the box but hit shot from close range was saved well by O’Sullivan. Two minutes later Condon should have done better with a shot from inside the box with just the keeper to beat but sent his shot high and wide. A good attack from Bury on 60 minutes saw Luke Read pull a great pass back to Bradley Barber to strike a curling effort towards the far post but Sam Cowler saved a full stretch. on 66 minutes Noel Aitken put a dangerous ball in for Bury which beat the keeper but neither Ollie Hughes or Darcy Death could get the vital tap in and the ball was cleared. Brightlingsea then took the lead on 68 minutes after a long ball up field fell to Phil Kelly who whipped in a cross for Aaron Condon to smash home. Another clear chance for the home side came on 75 minutes when substitute George Doyle was clean through on goal with just the keeper to beat but he tripped over his own feet and O’Sullivan made the clearance. Brightlingsea finished the game on top and took the win at the final whistle but again Bury Town proved they can compete with the best teams in the league.
