Blues come back from a goal down to win in season opener
A controlled performance by Bury Town saw them take all three points in the first game of the new season. Early chances from the Blues fell to Bradley Barber who fired over the bar on 4 minutes. Tevan Allen tried his luck from distance with a solid strike which went wide three minutes later. On 14 minutes Ollie Hughes battled down the wing and crossed on to the head of Josh Mayhew in the box but his header lacked power and was an easy save for visiting keeper Anthony Page. Next Bradley Barber played a beautiful cross field ball from deep to Tevan Allen who ran in on goal but Allen’s thumping strike was blocked by the defence. After Bury Towns bright start they fell behind to a 30th minute penalty. Bury debutant Andrew Cusack bringing down Ryan Blackman in the box and Blackman stepped up to put the visitors in front. Another Bury debutant Kyran Clements almost pulled the Blues level on 38 minutes when his deep cross in to the box sailed high and was heading in to the top corner but Page scrambled to get his finger tips to it and but the ball over the bar. Bury always looked dangerous going forward and were soon level. Bradley Barber played a free kick in to the box for Remi Garrett to shoot at goal, Page pulled off the save but the ball fell to Ollie Hughes to fire home the equalizer just before the break.

Ollie Hughes almost got his second goal a minute later. Hughes worked the ball in from the wing across the face of the box but his strike went just over the bar. Waltham Abbey could have grabbed a late equaliser on 80 minutes when substitute Ryan Flack was clear in the box close to goal but could only strike wide of the target. Bury took a deserved win and start the season with a good all round team performance and all three points.
