Bury Town stumbled into the next round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy with yet another single goal victory in a scrappy game with little goalmouth action, and punctuated by numerous fouls, offsides and bookings. After Wayne Brown narrowly avoided scoring an own goal in the opening minutes, Bury’s first chance fell to Lee Reed who headed wide after eight minutes. Aveley’s best effort was a looping shot from Sherwin Stanley which was tipped over by Marcus Garnham. Possession was equally shared, but defences we generally in control and neither keeper was troubled. As the half progressed, Aveley looked the more likely to break the deadlock as Tony Russell and Stanley both went close, and Garnham saved well from Daryl Robson.

Bury started the second half more brightly and Dave Hogan saved well from Craig Nurse from close range, and from a twenty yard effort by Danny Cunningham. The game then became disjointed with a succession of petty fouls and numerous bookings. A stalemate was looking likely when Bury finally took the lead with eleven minutes remaining. Kieran Leabon got clear of his marker on the left, and his low cross was scrambled into the net at the far post by Lee Reed.
